What the extension does

Dual Subtitles displays English and French subtitles at the same time on YouTube videos. It reads the caption track that the YouTube player has already requested for the video you are watching, fetches the English and French versions of that track from YouTube, and draws both lines over the player. When you hover a word, it can show that word's definition, an example sentence and synonyms.

Information that leaves your device

• The word you hover over. When the "Define words on hover" feature is on and you hover a word in the subtitles, that single word is sent to en.wiktionary.org to retrieve its dictionary entry. For English words, if Wiktionary lists fewer than eight synonyms, the word is also sent to api.datamuse.com to find more. Only the word itself is sent — no identifier, no page address, no video title, and nothing about you. These are public dictionary services and are governed by their own privacy policies. Turning off "Define words on hover" in the extension's popup stops these requests entirely.
• Caption requests to YouTube. The extension asks YouTube for the English and French versions of the caption track for the video you already have open. These requests go to YouTube, the site you are already using, and are subject to Google's privacy policy.

No other data is transmitted anywhere, by anyone, for any purpose.

Information collected by the developer

None. The extension has no backend, no database and no telemetry. The developer does not receive, see or store your browsing history, the videos you watch, the words you look up, your IP address, your location, or anything that could identify you. There is no analytics or crash-reporting service of any kind.

Information stored on your device

Your preferences from the extension's popup — whether dual subtitles are on, which language lines are shown, whether French sits on top, whether YouTube's own captions are hidden, the subtitle text size, and whether word lookup, pause-on-hover, example sentences and synonyms are enabled — are saved using chrome.storage.sync. This is Chrome's own settings storage. If you are signed into Chrome it syncs these settings between your own devices through your Google account; it does not send them to the developer.

Definitions and synonyms that have already been fetched are held in memory while the browser session lasts, purely to avoid repeating the same request. They are not written to disk and are gone when the browser closes.

Permissions and why they exist

• storage — to remember your settings, as described above.
• www.youtube.com — the extension only works on YouTube; this is where it draws the subtitles and reads the caption track.
• en.wiktionary.org — to fetch definitions, examples and synonyms for a hovered word.
• api.datamuse.com — to find additional English synonyms when Wiktionary lists few.

The extension requests no other permissions and runs on no other site.

Data sharing and sale

No data is sold, rented or transferred to third parties. Nothing is used for advertising, for building a profile, or to assess creditworthiness or lending eligibility. Because no data is collected in the first place, there is nothing to share.

Children

The extension is not directed at children and collects no personal information from anyone, including children under 13.

Changes to this policy

If the extension's data practices ever change, this page will be updated and the date at the top revised before the change ships. Material changes will also be noted in the extension's listing.
